I see something that makes me feel a certain way and I try to convey that with paint. I am often inspired by the subway. I see people from many cultures sharing an intimate space and traveling together. The fact that a hundred or so people can be packed into a small space and travel at high speeds through a tunnel deep beneath the ground, under rivers, harbors and skyscrapers has always astonished me. I can’t help myself from painting this. I enjoy the way people move through the stations. It can be incredibly solitary, despite the thousands of hiving people.
I am also exploring new subjects. I still paint what I see, feeling either awe, inspiration, warmth, compassion, intrigue or outrage. On a trip out West, I was looking out of the plane, watching the country move westward while I traveled eastward. I felt some of these feelings. Mostly awe and inspiration, but I also felt compassion. When I look out at the NY Harbor and see these massive ships on the water and the expansive sky above I feel awe and inspiration. I also feel outrage. I can smell the fuel seeping through the ships hull, as it transports from around the world what our farmers can grow just a few miles away.
